Camel racing is an ancient Bedouin sport practised today with a modern twist, thanks to the addition of remote-controlled robotic jockeys.

Watching camels gallop around the track at Al Tallah Camel Racecourse – while their owners zoom alongside them in fleets of 4x4s, beeping their horns – is a truly memorable experience.

The racecourse is located in the Al Tallah area, about 10 kilometres from the city centre, and can be reached via Sheikh Ammar bin Humaid Street.

Although there is no official timetable, the Al Tallah racecourse usually hosts early morning and afternoon meets on Fridays and Saturdays during the racing season, which runs from October to March, and visitors are welcome.

Don’t miss the annual Camel Festival held in February, which attracts participants from around the Gulf region and features camel racing and the rather unusual camel beauty pageant, along with heritage activities.

From the fruit and vegetable market follow Sheikh Zayed Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. Turn right at the large junction, and take the first exit after the petrol station.
